Look Ahead: Star Wars Episode VII

It is with shock and awe that I sit down to write this article. Unknown to me I woke up expecting an ordinary day, instead I wake up to the news that Star Wars will be returning to our screens… in 2015

NEW STAR WARS FILMS!!!!!

Yes, thats right, take a deep breath… calm down… Now lets look at the facts…

This announcement comes courtesy of a little financial transaction in which Disney purchased Lucasfilm from its creator and owner George Lucas for 4.3 billion dollars. Staggering I know but its a deal well worth the cost for Disney considering the brands they have acquired. Not only do they now own all intellectual rights for Star Wars but they also have in their arsenal the Indiana Jones franchise along with Lucasfilm’s production and sound companies. It’s a huge merger for Disney who already own Pixar and Marvel respectively. Thats the finance bit out of the way, but why is this so exciting?

Well if you’re not a Star Wars fan its time to get up to speed. Since 1977 audiences have been gripped by the tales of the Skywalker family and their Jedi antics. Spanning three generations and six films, various planetary systems and creatures, lightsaber duels and space battles, Star Wars is the bench mark by which all science- fiction is judged. 2015 may well be a long way off yet but its the fact that now we can begin to ‘talk plots’ that is interesting. It may still not be made (at the price of 4.3 billion though you can you bet your arse it 99.9% will) but just for fun we’re going to speculate on what could happen next…

… Its so interesting to talk about the potential stories for the follow up trilogy. Disney are already calling it Episode VII which would mean it would follow on (plot wise) from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Here we left Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Lando Calrissian and a whole bunch of Ewoks on the forest moon of Endor basking in victory over the evil Empire and looking fondly towards the ghosts of Obi Wan, Yoda and Anakin Skywalker. A truly heartwarming end to an impressive series of films but the ending always did seem a little rushed. What could be next for Luke and company? We know in the books that one of Han and Leia’s children goes rogue and becomes a Sith only for Luke to have to kill him as well. Potential story? I think not.

And it always mystified me how Darth Sidious only ever trained one Sith lord in Vader to work along side him. Surely a whole army of Sith warriors would have been a better protection for the Empire and the Death Star? This was cleared up in a way by Yoda’s statement in Episode I: The Phantom Menace where he stated “Siths come in pairs, the master and the apprentice” but still its something that could be looked into.

With the success of the online game Star Wars: The Old Republic which deals with the great war between the Jedi and Sith there is huge potential for Disney to spin off from the Skywalker generation entirely. I don’t think many fans would like to see aged actors like Mark Hammill and Harrison Ford reprise their roles, nor would anyone really appreciate a re-casting of beloved characters. Imagine the likes of Orlando Bloom as Luke Skywalker… Tom Hardy as Han Solo… The Go Compare guy as Jabba the Hut… its a horrible thought and not one that I think will be attempted. Obviously none of the actors I just mentioned would be considered… except the Go Compare guy…

With the franchise in hand Disney really could go anywhere, there is a vast universe to Star Wars beyond the films in written fiction fan and official alike, countless games and written histories. A story set thousands of years before of after any of the current six films is highly plausible.

For me I’d like to see a trilogy that links up to the prequel trilogy, so a prequel prequel trilogy to be nice and complicated… It could cover numerous story lines such as Qui- Gon Jin and Obi Wan’s origins. Maybe we could even see Yoda’s home world? How Count Dooku turned to the Dark Side. Master Sila Dias’ creation of the Clone Army. We could even touch upon the origins of the Jedi and Sith races the potential here is quite exciting. And where the hell General Grievous was born/ created… but then again he does look like something gone wrong in a Chinese sweat shop.

And I’ve not even touched upon the ‘Force Unleashed’ games which propose a highly impressive storyline as well.

All in all its going to be a long three year wait and only time will reveal to us where Disney will choose to take the Star Wars universe but until then be patient and in the words of Obi Wan Kenobi “may the force be with you”…
